Overseas Citizens not allowed for Karnataka CET 2016

The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has not permitted the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) candidates to apply for Karnataka CET 2016. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has given permission to the OCI candidates for the JEE Main entrance test, but in Karnataka, the candidates have no hope of appearing for the State’s Common Entrance Test (CET).

Earlier on August 27, 2015, the Karnataka High Court had directed that these students be allowed to appear in the common entrance test, but the KEA officials said that they are unaware of the said order.

KEA Administrative Officer Gangadhariah reiterated that they had sent a request for amendment of CET Rules to the government almost two years ago. However, no decision has been taken so far. If the candidates show us the High Court order, they will certainly look into it. They will work out something, and seek the government’s permission to obey the order.

As per now, only Indian citizens can appear for the entrance exam and there is no provision for OCI candidates. The OCI candidates are left with the option of either applying for a seat under the management quota or going for Comedk seats.

On the other hand, a delegation of overseas candidates has requested the government to take a serious look into the issue. The Centre’s provisions specify that OCI candidates are eligible for education in the Karnataka state. The parents of some candidates alleged that the KEA officials were misguiding people. Even they have met the Education Minister and the Principal Secretary for an early redressal of the grievance. If nothing would be done, they would approach the High Court again.
