Amazing Watermelon

Beneficial ingredients in watermelon and other fruits and
vegetables are known as phyto-nutrients, naturally
occurring compounds that are bioactive. In watermelons,
these include lycopene, beta carotene and citrulline.
When watermelon is consumed, citrulline is converted
into arginine through certain enzymes. Arginine is an
amino acid that works wonders on the heart and circulation
system and maintains a good immune system.
“The more we study watermelons, the more we realize
just how amazing a fruit it is in providing natural
enhancers to the human body,” said Dr. Bhimu Patil,
Director of Texas A&M’s Fruit and Vegetable Improvement
Centre.
“The citrulline-arginine relationship, helps heart
health, the immune system and prove to be very helpful for
those who suffer from obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels,
helps treat erectile dysfunction and may help even prevent
it,” said Dr. Patil.
While there are many psychological and physiological
problems that can cause impotence, extra nitric oxide
could help those who need increased blood flow, which
would also help treat angina, high blood pressure and
other cardiovascular problems.
The benefits of watermelon don’t end here. Arginine
also helps the urea cycle by removing ammonia and other
toxic compounds from the body.

Turmeric can prevent
heart diseases
Researchers at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre of the
Toronto General Hospital have discovered that curcumin, a
natural compound found in turmeric, may substantially
reduce the chances of developing heart failure. The
researchers found that turmeric can prevent and reverse
cardiac hypertrophy (heart enlargement), restore heart
function and reduce scar formation.
Turmeric is used widely in Asian cooking. It is also
an important ingredient in Indian and Chinese medicines.
Turmeric is a home remedy for minor cut and sore throats.
Turmeric powder is mixed with coconut oil and applied on
cuts and bruises. It heals the wound without leaving a bad
scar. For sore throats, turmeric is mixed in warm saline
water and gargled at regular intervals. It soothes and
restores the voice almost immediately.
“What is impressive about curcumin’s effects is its
ability to shut off one of the major switches right at the
chromosome source where the enlargement and scarring genes
are being turned on,” says Dr. Peter Liu, cardiologist in
the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.
If clinical trials support the new findings, curcumin
may offer a safe and inexpensive treatment option for
millions of heart enlargement patients.

Bonding is stronger in
natural childbirth

The
bonding between the mother and her newborn is stronger in
natural delivery than in c-delivery (caesarean section),
according to a study by Yale School of Medicine.
The researchers led by Dr. James Swain, MD, recruited
two groups of mothers. One group had caesarean section and
the other group had natural (vaginal) delivery.
The researchers made the mothers listen to recordings
of heir baby’s cry during a diaper change, while
simultaneously scanning heir brains using the advanced
fMRI.
The researchers found greater activity in certain
brain regions of mothers who delivered vaginally compared
to mothers who delivered through caesarean section. The
brain regions that showed greater activity were cortical
regions that regulate emotions and empathy.
“I suspect that the parental brain in ‘primed’ by
vaginal delivery and affected by neurohormonal factors
such as oxytocin, a hormone linked to emotional
connections and feelings of love. C-sections may alter
these neurohormonal factors and increase the risk of
problematic bonding and postpartum depression,” said Dr.
Swain.
“There are plenty of good reasons for caesarean
sections, and we would not want our work to be
misinterpreted as proving that mothers, who opt for
c-sections are destined for trouble,” added Dr.Swain.
These results provoke many questions and may help
expectant mothers as they consider their options
carefully.

Smoking causes bladder
cancer
Urine
is a primary means through which the body flushes out
toxins. The lining of the bladder is particularly
susceptible to these compounds because of its role in
storing urine. High toxicity levels in the urine can cause
the cells in the bladder to become cancerous.
There are several symptoms of bladder cancer. The
most common symptom is blood in the urine without any
accompanying pain. Pain upon urination and frequent
urination are other symptoms of bladder cancer.
Not many people are aware that smoking causes bladder
cancer, according to Dr. Seth A. Strope and Dr. James E.
Montie of the
University of
Michigan Health System.
The American Urological Association wants people to know
that smoking is a leading risk factor for bladder cancer.
Besides smokers, people who work with paints, dyes,
leather, metals, textiles etc. carry a 20 to 25 percent
higher risk of contracting bladder cancer.
If diagnosed early, bladder cancer is curable.
Treatment includes tumour removal, chemotherapy or
removing the bladder itself. Prevention includes quitting
smoking, avoiding exposure to paints, dyes and other
similar chemicals and avoiding toxic (chemical-laden) food
and drinks.

Breastfeeding reduces
breast cancer risk

The
World Cancer Research Fund found that three out of four
women were unaware of the fact that breastfeeding could
cut their risk of developing breast cancer, the most
common form of cancer in women. The finding from a new
study has corroborated the common belief that
breastfeeding significantly reduces a mother’s risk of
breast cancer.
“If a woman breastfeeds two or more children for at
least six months each, over a lifetime, it is clear she
can make a significant impact on the cancer risk, not to
mention all the other benefits of breastfeeding,” Dr.
Rachel Thompson of the World Cancer Research Fund said.
“We want to get across the message that breastfeeding
is something positive that women can do to reduce their
risk of breast cancer,” Dr.Thompson said. “Because the
evidence that breastfeeding reduces breast cancer risk is
convincing, we recommend women should breastfeed
exclusively for six months and then continue with
complementary feeding after that,” Dr. Thompson urged.

Obese men have more
sperm abnormalities
Obese
men must seriously consider losing weight if they want to
have children. Dr.Ghiyath Shayeb from the University of
Aberdeen, UK, said that obese men have lower seminal fluid
and a higher proportion of abnormal sperm.
The scientists divided the men into four groups from
being underweight to being considerably overweight. Other
characteristics that could confound the analysis, such as
smoking, alcohol intake, age, social deprivation and the
length of time of abstinence from sex prior to producing a
semen sample for analysis were taken into account. The
research found that men who had an optimal BMI (20 t0 25
as classified by WHO) had higher levels of normal sperm
than those in other groups. They also had higher semen
volume.
“Our findings seem to suggest that men who are trying
for a baby with their partners, should first try to
achieve an ideal body weight,” said Dr. Shayeb.
Adopting a healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet and
regular exercises will, in the vast majority of cases,
lead to a normal BMI. Improved semen quality can be added
to the long list of benefits of an optimal body weight.
It
has already been established that obesity is a known risk
factor for problems in conceiving among women.

Keeping
cellphones in pockets could affect fertility
Dr.
Ashok Agarwal, Director, Center for Advanced Research in
Human Reproduction, Infertility and Sexual Function,
Cleveland, Ohio and his colleagues investigated the effect
of cellphone use on fertility.
The men undergoing fertility evaluation were divided
into four groups according to their cellphone usage. Group
A – no cellphone use; Group B – less than 2 hours per day;
Group C - 2 to 4 hours per day; Group D - more than 4
hours per day.
The researchers compared sperm parameters such as
sperm count, motility, viability and normal morphology
among the four groups. They found that the value of all
the four sperm parameters decreased as the duration of
daily exposure to cell phones increased.
When the sperm was exposed for one hour to cell phone
radiation of 850 megahertz, the frequency most often used
by cellphones, there was an increase of 85% in free
radicals and decrease of 6% in antioxidants in the exposed
samples. Sperm motility (movement) decresed by 7% and
viability (life) decreased by 11%.
Men who keep their cellphones in their pockets or
clip them to their belts while using an ear piece to chat,
may be compromising their sperm quality and damaging their
fertility, cautioned the researchers.
